Create Effective Time-Saving Presentations With ENVI Agent and GeoAgent

My colleague Dr. Thomas Bahr recently used GeoAgent™ and ENVI® Agent to map the abundance of the mineral Bastnaesite in Mountain Pass Mine, California. Bastnaesite is a primary mineral ore from which the rare-earth element (REE) neodymium is extracted. You can view a summary of the analysis here:

What impressed me was that the agents not only built and ran the analysis workflow, but they also created a nicely formatted HTML report summarizing the results. The report is well organized, visually appealing, and provides additional context to describe the purpose of the study.

To prepare for the analysis, Dr. Bahr downloaded an AVIRIS-NG hyperspectral image (courtesy of NASA/JPL) and acquired a U.S. Geological Survey reference spectrum of Bastnaesite. He provided GeoAgent with detailed instructions to carry out the analysis, while providing some additional context to guide the process. At a high-level, the steps look like this:

  • Open the AVIRIS-NG image and spectral library in ENVI.
  • Indicate what mineral to look for (i.e., Bastnaesite/Neodymium).
  • Run Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) classification.
  • Create a raster color slice classification from the SAM rule image.
  • Calculate classification statistics.
  • Display the result in ENVI.
  • Create an ENVI Modeler workflow where subsequent users can select their own mineral spectra to evaluate.

To validate his findings, he performed the same analysis directly in ENVI and found that the results were similar to those of GeoAgent. Finally, he asked ENVI Agent to run the analysis and create a final report. What also impressed me was the ease with which ENVI Agent created an ENVI Modeler workflow. It not only created a visual graphic of the model, as shown below, but also produced an output model file that can be reused.

Homologous optical and SAR comparison

After creating a reusable workflow, users can prompt ENVI Agent to create a final report; for example:

  1. Save screenshots of the ENVI-produced images in PNG format.
  2. Add a screenshot of the original RGB image for comparison.
  3. Consider the difference between ENVI and IDL in the origin of the first pixel.
  4. Add a color table to the PNG of the raster color slice classification.
  5. Discuss the classification result from a mineralogic/geologic point of view.
  6. Output the summary, results, and discussion as an HTML file, including PNGs and spectral plots.
  7. Add a screenshot of the *.model file to the HTML report with a short explanation of the model and how to use it.

Agentic AI applications like GeoAgent and ENVI Agent open the door to endless opportunities for solving geospatial problems. They don’t just create maps and appealing images, but they can also help synthesize results into effective time-saving presentations.
