Not All Supernovae Are Created Equal: Rethinking the Universe’s Measuring Tools

6/3/2025

Rethinking the Reliability of Type 1a Supernovae   How do astronomers measure the universe? It all starts with distance. From gauging the size of a galaxy to calculating how fast the universe is expanding, measuring cosmic distances is essential to understanding everything in the sky. For nearby stars, astronomers use... Read More >

Using LLMs To Research Remote Sensing Software: Helpful, but Incomplete

5/26/2025

Whether you’re new to remote sensing or a seasoned expert, there is no doubt that large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini can be incredibly useful in many aspects of research. From exploring the electromagnetic spectrum to creating object detection models using the latest deep learning... Read More >

From Image to Insight: How GEOINT Automation Is Changing the Speed of Decision-Making

4/28/2025

When every second counts, the ability to process geospatial data rapidly and accurately isn’t just helpful, it’s critical. Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) has always played a pivotal role in defense, security, and disaster response. But in high-tempo operations, traditional workflows are no longer fast enough. Analysts are... Read More >

Enhancing Situational Awareness with SAR Data

Cherie Tyrrell

The use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data has become increasingly popular due to its many advantages, such as its ability to capture data day or night and see through clouds. For these reasons and many others, SAR data has been embraced by defense and intelligence organizations worldwide.

Typical D&I Applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Launches of numerous SmallSats or MicroSats with SAR sensors also means that target areas can be frequented with very high revisit rates. Advanced capabilities and software technologies that can manage, analyze, and transform SAR data into actionable intelligence and quickly disseminate it, hold the promise of tactical and strategic advantage.

If you are interested in the benefits of using SAR data for GEOINT applications, I highly recommend reading a whitepaper that was recently written by Dr. Dipak Paudyal, Chief Scientist & Managing Director of APAC Geospatial. The whitepaper answers questions such as, “how do I get started working with SAR data?,” “What types of objects and materials can I detect?,” and “What are the most common defense and intelligence scenarios for working with SAR data?” Some of the scenarios covered in this whitepaper include:

• Locating specific targets of interest
• Tracking the movement of targets
• Monitoring land displacement from environmental and human activities

Other caveats and tips are provided for working with SAR data in ENVI® SARscape® – the software used by defense and intelligence analysts to process and analyze SAR data.
