    Does anyone know how to start up ENVI4.5 on linux with the new IDLDE 7.0. BY default I seem to get the old development environment.

    Do you have a resource file in your home directory that sources IDL 6.4? What happens if you source the envi_setup in the ENVI 4.5 bin directory, then launch idlde? It should bring up the IDLWorkbench.
