I'm stacking landsat imagery, then doing a few steps in Envi (4.5). The problem is that Envi adds to the layer name each step, and then if I do a couple steps, by the time I export to .img format, the names are so long that they get truncated, and I lose the info I need (the band number!! but also the image date and my own simple code) in the result. It's easy to rename image layers in Arc Catalog after the export, but often that's too late as there's nothing left of the original layer names... I can't figure this out in Envi. Better still, is there a way to keep Envi from renaming the layers as I do operations? - just leave them as are? After all, the output image's name changes, so I don't need the layers changes as well - that's just confusing and helps lose data! Any ideas? Tx, /rjl

You can rename the bands in ENVI by selecting the file in the Available Bands List, then right clicking and choosing Edit Header. In the resulting Header Info dialog, choose Edit Attributes > Band Names. You will get a list of the current band names, and you can change them by clicking on them and typing in a new name, or by importing names from an ASCII file. Or, you could just click the Clear button to change the names to simply Band 1, Band 2, Band 3, etc. - Peg
