I'm a novice ENVI user and I am having trouble opening a USGS NED DEM. I have an 1/3 arc second NED DEM that was downloaded as GeoTiff, mosaicked and projected to UTM zone 18 in ArcGIS. I am now trying to open it in ENVI. I have tried the .tif file, the world file (.tfw?) and neither have worked. I either get a "not a valid file" message or the file opens but displays with every pixel the same value (a flat grey image). I have tried to open it using Open Image menu item and the Topographic menu. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Linda

Did you project the DEM in ArcGIS or did it come this way? Geotiff is a generic format that is easily opened in ENVI. If you get an error opening the file, I would suspect that the file is corrupted. You would always select the .TIF to open and not the world file (tfw). If you do get the file open, do the pixels actually have the same value or do they just appear as grey? It could be a stretching issue. If you right cllick on the file name in the Available Bands List, you can calculate statistics and find out the true data range of the file. I've heard that NED uses an unusual 'no data' value that is very tiny and could be throwing off the image display.
