Hi Adam,
I was glad to see the improved linked viewing capabilities and control. However there are still a few things I've mentioned via the forum and was told that those would be added as feature requests that apparently didn't make it to SP1 yet. Some of that functionality is available in ENVI Classic, so I'd assume it should be possible to implement it in ENVI 5 also. See below for a list:
- How to get crosshairs in all views? Just get it in one at the time.
- Related to that, is it possible to have linked views, then open the cursor value and have the data from all open views returned? The only workaround for this I found would be load all the data I want to investigate with the cursor value in the one view I do the cursor value and have them displayed in the other views, but it'd be great if the cursor value could be returned from all linked views.
- Saving a 'project' to quickly reload the view configuration, band stretching, linked views, etc. I know there's a tool available in the code library that does something like that, but that one could still be improved.
- Along with the project saving, it would also be nice to be able to rename the views, similar to what ArcMap has with its data frames.
- It would be nice if the display could be divided into 2x3 or 2x4 or basically any layout one wants.
- The classification tools/workflows in ENVI 5 are still so much more limited than what the Classic version is capable of (e.g. assigning class colors and names for an unsupervised output is a drag or impossible, but is real easy in Classic)
- The color and color ramp choosing in ENVI in general is still cumbersome with having to choose colors/ramps by names instead of having a color/ramp pick tool that actually shows the colors/ramps. That'd be so much easier and less time-consuming. I think I've been asking for this since ENVI 4.7 but it never seems to be important enough.
In general, how long does ExelisVis plan to keep ENVI Classic around? It is still very much needed at this point because the new ENVI 5 hasn't caught up to it in so many ways yet. The new workflows (e.g. classification, rectification) miss some important functionality that the Classic version of those tools have, so almost all the remote-sensing tutorials I write for courses rely on ENVI Classic.
I hope that my comments will somehow make it to the software developers and decision makers to get these improvements into a future release.
Best Regards,
Mike
