Do ASTER 1B .hdf files have with them an associated .hdr file? When I download ASTER 1B data through Reverb (http://reverb.echo.nasa.gov/) it only lets me download 1 file which has an .hdf extension. The problem I'm having is that the solar zenith/incidence angle is located apparently in the .hdr file but I don't have this file (only the .hdf) file. I have viewed the .hdf file using the "View HDF Global Attributes" tool but have not found this information in the .hdf file and am assuming it is in the .hdr file (missing). Am I missing something (obvious)? I need these angles to calculate reflectance.

The ASTER datasets I've seen don't come with a *.hdr file. When ENVI reads an ASTER image it finds the sun azimuth and elevation angles stored as metadata in the HDF file. You can see them in ENVI by bringing up the Metadata Viewer for the imported ASTER image. No header (*.hdr) file is involved. In my experience, a file with a *.hdr filename extension is usually the ASCII header file associated with an ENVI format file. ENVI format header files can optionally store a solar azimuth and elevation angle. If you've saved an ASTER image to an ENVI format file, then you would have those fields in the resulting ENVI header file. - Peg Exelis VIS

Thanks Peg. How can I access the Metadata Viewer in ENVI classic? I've tried to open a .hdf file using the "View HDF Global Attributes" and the "View HDF Dataset Attributes" but I am unable to locate the sun azimuth and elevation angles. Alternatively, I have tried to save the .hdf file into a standard ENVI file (with a .hdr file) but, upon opening the .hdr file with a text editor, I still cannot find the solar elevation angle in this file. This is the ASTER .hdf file I'm using here: http://e4ftl01.cr.usgs.go...0924210713_30022.hdf Using this file, could somebody tell me the steps necessary to see these image parameters (azimuth, elevation, sun distance, etc.)? I feel like I'm missing something obvious here. Thanks, I have been using this help ENVI tutorial here but I don't believe this is for ENVI classic: http://www.exelisvis.com/...Metadata.html#Raster

There is no Metadata viewer in ENVI Classic. This additional information is extracted from the HDF files in ENVI. The sun azimuth and elevation is defined in the ASTER User's Guide as 'SOLARDIRECTION': https://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/content... The earth-sun distance is calculated from a table based on the date of the imagery.
