Hello, We recently obtained a number of Level 2 ASTER scenes from JSS. For each scene, there are three files, all in .DAT format. I had no issues opening the files containing VNIR and SWIR bands, but cannot open the TIR (Surface Emissivity) bands. I am using ENVI 5.3 - and have tried classic, classic (32-bit) and the standard versions. Each time, I receive an error "Problem: An error was encountered reading from this file. Error: Variable is undefined: GAINS" Any thoughts on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Are you trying to open the data using File->Open As->Optical Sensor->EOS->ASTER? If so, this reader was designed to open HDF format ASTER data. I am not sure if '.dat' is ENVI format or something else they created. Does the data come with an associated .hdr? Can you use File->Open on the data?

Thank you Mari. I have tried to open the files both ways. Same error occurs. The VNIR and SWIR bands are provided as .DAT and .BRS files. The latter appears to be a binary metadata file. TIR dataset only has the .DAT file (no BRS). This is the case for all four scenes I have. I have no issues opening the VNIR and SWIR bands by going to File -> Open External File --> EOS --> ASTER, changing the file type from .HDF to all file types (*.*) and selecting the .DAT file... Thanks.

If it is HDF data, then can you open it using Open As->Generic Format->HDF4? Otherwise, I don't know what format the data might be in but ENVI is expecting HDF format for ASTER.
