Hello, I am running ENVI and IDL on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. At first it was working fine, but now it keeps crashing all the time. This is the error I get: # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007f98ea5e7d8b, pid=3863, tid=140296014931712 # # JRE version: 7.0_25-b15 # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (23.25-b01 mixed mode linux-amd64 compressed oops) # Problematic frame: # C [i965_dri.so+0x20ad8b] _init+0x1bf86b # # Failed to write core dump. Can you tell me what version of ENVI you are Linux you are running? Have there been any recent updates to the system? One thing I would try - remove or delete the .idl directory under your home directory. This directory contains many of the IDL and ENVI configuration files, including the ENVI Extensions folder. After you move or delete this directory, try to start ENVI or IDL again, which will recreate this directory as 'fresh'. This sometimes fixes errors that suddenly start happening.

I am running ENVI 5.3.1. Every time I load a simple shapefile ENVI crashes. I found this post explaining a patch for IDL 8.3 / ENVI 5.1. Do you know if it will work for 5.3?\ Thanks

Do you think this is an ENVI/IDL error or is it related to my graphics card. I might be able to install a new driver - but I don't want to do this unless I know this error is related to my graphics driver. Thanks!

Did you try removing the .idl directory? Yes, it could be graphics card related. Before upgrading your drivers, you can test to see if the graphics card is causing an issue by going into the idl85\bin\bin.linux.x86_64 directory and rename the gl_driver.so to something like gl_driver.old so that it will be ignored when you launch IDL and force IDL/ENVI into software rendering mode.

I tried removing the .idl folder and this did not help. I renamed the gl_driver.so to gl_driver.so.old and now envi seems to be running much smoother. Presumably this means it is in software rendering mode... could I just leave it in this mode at the expense of the graphics performance? Are there any other drawbacks? Does this mean the issue is my graphics driver? Thanks!

Yes, it means that the graphics drivers are not communicating well with IDL/ENVI. You can try upgrading the drivers and rename the gl_driver.so back to normal to see if it resolves the issue. You can always go back into software rendering. There will be some performance hit using software rendering if you have a high performance graphics card that cannot be used. If it was not a very good graphics card, you may not notice much difference in performance. We suggest a graphics card with at least 1gb dedicated memory for best performance.

Thanks that really helps. Just to clarify - the performance hit would just be with the graphics rendering - is that correct. I am doing most the analysis in idl and then just using the ENVI GUI to occasionally visualize results. Therefore, a reduced graphics performance would not be that big of a deal.

Yes, that is mostly true. Displays may be slower. There are a couple add-on modules (a special version of Quac and Ortho) that can take advantage of the GPU but unless you have those, the performance hit will be in displaying many large images with overlays and such.

    Hello,
I believe I am having a related problem. I will also start a new thread in case this is not a related problem.
I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and ENVI 5.4. I installed ENVI yesterday. I tried to open a .las file and I get an error

    ENVIPointCloudViewer not supported on linux

Additionally, I am unable to copy a file path (or anything) into the directory path window at the open file GUI - not sure if that is a bug or if that is the excepted functionality.

    Thanks for any help.
