Installing the optional Apple X11 package on Mac OS X

Graphical displays in IDL and ENVI for Mac OS X requires Apple X11, which is an optionally installed package available on the Mac OS X operating system Install disk.

If you did not install the Apple X11 optional application package during the installation of your current operating system, it is possible to install just this package using the Optional Installs package installer that is included on the Mac OS X installation disk. Using this installer, it is not necessary to overwrite or reinstall the Mac OS X operating system.

This article discusses how to install Apple X11 via the Optional Installs package installer. The procedure is based on the installer CD for Mac OS X 10.4. The actual process for installing the Apple X11 application may be different for other versions of Mac OS X.Discussion:
To install the optional Apple X11 application package after you have already installed your Mac OS X operating system:

  1. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1.
  2. Scroll down in the Install disk window. Find and double-click the "Optional Installs.mpkg." (The installer program may appear as just "Optional Installs".)

  3. After the installer opens, follow the prompts until you get to the custom install options screen
  4. Expand the Applications section by clicking the disclosure triangle to the left of the Application package name. Then check the X11 option checkbox.

  5. Click OK and then click Install to proceed with the installation of the Apple X11 package.
