Node-Locked Licensing Patch for IDL and ENVI on macOS 27 Golden Gate

Updated: October 9, 2026

Node-locked licensing for IDL and ENVI has been impacted by security changes introduced in macOS 27. These changes will prevent the software from validating node-locked licenses.

You may encounter this issue in one of two ways:

  1. A previously functioning node-locked license stops working after upgrading to macOS 27.
  2. Activation of a new node-locked license on macOS 27 fails with one of the following errors:

Server error: Unable to find valid bindings for this machine

or

Response Code 453: No valid bindings specified

NOTE: Licensing obtained through a local NV5 License Server on your network is not affected.

A patch is available to restore node-locked licensing functionality on macOS 27 for supported IDL and ENVI installations. Please follow the instructions below to download, install, and re-license your IDL or ENVI installation.

Installing the macOS 27 Licensing Patch

Step 1: Download the Patch

  1. Log in to the NV5 Customer Portal.
  2. Navigate to Product Downloads.
  3. Enter "patch" in the Name filter.
  4. Locate and download Licensing Patch for macOS 27.

Step 2: Extract the Patch Files

After downloading the patch package, open Apple Terminal and navigate to the directory containing the downloaded file.

Run the following command which extracts the patch installer script:

tar xvf nv5-licensing-macos27-patch.tar

Step 2: Run the Installer

If IDL or ENVI is installed in your home directory, run:

./install_patch.sh

If IDL or ENVI is installed in a system location such as /Applications, administrator privileges are required:

sudo ./install_patch.sh

Step 3: Select the Installation to Update

The installer will display informational messages and then prompt you for the path to the IDL installation you wish to update.

Typical installation paths include:

~/Applications/nv5/idl93

~/Applications/nv5/envi63/idl93

or

/Applications/nv5/idl93

/Applications/nv5/envi63/idl93

If multiple IDL or ENVI installations exist on your Mac, run the installer separately for each installation.

Step 4: Reactivate Your License After Installation

After installing the patch, you must deactivate and then reactivate any previously activated IDL or ENVI license on the computer.

  1. Open the ENVI-IDL License Administrator.
  2. Deactivate the existing license (if applicable)
  3. Reactivate the license using your existing Activation Code. NOTE: This step requires internet connection. If your computer is on a restricted network, please contact NV5 Technical Support for assistance with reactivation.

Failure to deactivate and reactivate the license may prevent the updated licensing components from functioning correctly.

Patch Frequently Asked Questions

What versions of IDL and ENVI are supported by the patch?

The patch is intended for IDL and ENVI installations that use NV5's Next Generation Licensing.

The patch has been tested with:

  • IDL 9.0 through IDL 9.3
  • ENVI 6.0 through ENVI 6.3

Will the patch update all IDL and ENVI installations on my Mac?

No. The patch updates only the installation directory you select during installation. If you have multiple IDL and/or ENVI installations on the same Mac, run the patch installer once for each installation. Each time the installer runs, you will be prompted to specify the IDL installation directory to update.

Should I install the patch if I am running macOS 26 or earlier?

Yes, if you plan to upgrade to macOS 27 in the future. However, the patch is not required for systems running macOS 26 or earlier.

Should I install the patch if I only license ENVI and IDL from a local license server hosted on my network?

No, the patch exclusively corrects an issue with node-locked licensing on macOS 27. Network licenses will work with or without the patch.

Will licensing continue to work if I install the patch on macOS 26 or earlier?

Yes. The updated licensing components are compatible with both macOS 27 and earlier supported macOS versions.

Do I need to update my Intel Mac?

No. Intel-based Macs cannot run macOS 27 and are therefore not affected by this issue.

Do I need the patch if I am running an Intel version of IDL or ENVI on an Apple Silicon Mac using Rosetta 2?

Yes. Intel versions of IDL and ENVI running under Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon Macs still require the patch when the system is running macOS 27.

Which files are updated by the patch?

The patch updates the following files within the product installation:

<idl_dir>/bin/bin.darwin.<arch>/libalan.dylib

<idl_dir>/license_utils/bin.darwin.<arch>/licensing

Before replacing these files, the installer creates backups by renaming the original versions with a .orig extension.

Once IDL or ENVI has been successfully reactivated and verified to run correctly, the .orig backup files may be removed.

Still Having Issues?

If you continue to experience licensing issues after installing the patch or reactivating your license, please contact NV5 Technical Support for assistance.
