ENVI 5 SP3 Hotfix for Landsat-8 (OLI)

ENVI 5 SP3 added support for the new Landsat-8 OLI sensor that includes file open (using the .mtl metadata file) and calibration. Since the release of SP3, there have been some changes in the Landsat metadata that required a change in ENVI to extract the correct metadata from the file for calibration.

In addition to this change, the reflectance calculation was updated to correct for sun elevation to provide reflectances similar to previous Landsat calibration results for Landsat 1-7.   Lastly, the Cirrus and Quality bands are now opened as separate bands in the Data Manager.  These bands are useful for evaluating the quality of the Landsat images but should not be included in other processes such as Land Classification.

This hotfix addresses the following issues:

  • ENVI-69068: Thermal K1 and K2 coefficients are now read from the metadata.
  • ENVI-69070: Reflectance gains and offsets have been corrected for sun elevation.
  • ENVI-69079: The Cirrus Cloud band is available as a separate band in the Data Manager.
  • ENVI-69106: The Quality band is available as a separate band in the Data Manager.
