How the Cloud Impacts Earth Observation for Environmental Monitoring

As always the ESRI UC in San Diego was an educational and enjoyable event to attend and be part of. The really exciting part for me (besides seeing will-i-am!) was how cloud computing and analytics in the cloud computing environment are gathering speed and momentum in the geospatial world, and the UC was truly evident of that.
So what does this mean for environmental monitoring? Well I've heard claims that environmental monitoring is often unscientific, too expensive, and wasteful. However, it is an essential component of environmental science. Therefore geospatial software solutions today, with cloud technologies, are more dedicated than ever to enable the study, management, and preservation of our environment and natural resources.
Today we can take environmental monitoring to the next step, from the desktop to the cloud, by enabling geospatial information extraction and knowledge discovery anywhere and anytime. Advanced analytics, such as advanced image analytics, can now be deployed to virtually any existing enterprise infrastructure.  Now users can take full advantage of information derived say from imagery from their desktop, mobile devices, or web applications to prepare for natural disaster response, to manage natural resources, and more importantly save lives and help save the planet.
