INTERNAL: IDL / ENVI installation error “The installation of MSVC_2005_SP1_x64_x86 has failed”

THIS INFORMATION ONLY PERTAINS TO SOFTWARE VERSIONS IDL 8.5, ENVI 5.3 AND PRIOR
During installation of IDL / ENVI you might encounter the following error message
“The installation of MSVC_2005_SP1_x64_x86 has failed. Setup will now exit.”
This error message is reported as “ENVI-69590” in our bug reporting system and probably related to a non-correct installation of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) on the affected Windows System (filename "vcredist.exe"). This package provides runtime components of C++ Libraries on a computer that does not have Visual C++ 2005 installed, and is necessary since the core of the IDL / ENVI platform is based on this language.
The problem is, hence, a system issue and not an installer issue of our software. First you should check if you have the latest service packs and updates for your Windows version running, if all of them have been correctly installed and if your system is up to date. Check also in the Control Panel in "Programs and Features" if the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) was correctly installed on your Windows operating system.
If, after reboot (and restart of the services), this does not fix the problem, you should try to manually (re-) install the necessary packages. These include the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) as well as the latest Microsoft Visual C++ run-time files and operating system components which are available from Microsoft. After having installed the necessary Microsoft packages, try to re-install IDL / ENVI (after having these deinstalled before) and reboot the system. For older ENVI versions also verify that you are using the 64-bit installer of ENVI in case of a Windows 64-bit system architecture, and the 32-bit version in case of Windows 32-bit.
