Not All Supernovae Are Created Equal: Rethinking the Universe’s Measuring Tools

6/3/2025

Rethinking the Reliability of Type 1a Supernovae   How do astronomers measure the universe? It all starts with distance. From gauging the size of a galaxy to calculating how fast the universe is expanding, measuring cosmic distances is essential to understanding everything in the sky. For nearby stars, astronomers use... Read More >

Using LLMs To Research Remote Sensing Software: Helpful, but Incomplete

5/26/2025

Whether you’re new to remote sensing or a seasoned expert, there is no doubt that large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini can be incredibly useful in many aspects of research. From exploring the electromagnetic spectrum to creating object detection models using the latest deep learning... Read More >

Access New Machine Learning Capabilities in ENVI

Zachary Norman

Well, hello there!
My name is Zach Norman and I’m one of the ENVI Product Managers at NV5 Geospatial. I’m excited to announce that in the next few weeks we will be releasing a free update for ENVI which will support machine learning algorithms!

For anyone who upgrades to ENVI 5.6.3, you will have a new toolbox called “Machine Learning” with an entry called “Install Machine Learning Tools.” Upon selecting the installation tool, here is what you will see:

If you select the button for “Download Installer” you will need to sign into our Download and Licensing Portal, and then select and download the ENVI Deep Learning 2.0 installer (no license or cost is required if you are current on maintenance). Once installed, you will then have access to pixel-based machine learning algorithms!

Apart from what is shown in the screenshot on the left, here are a few other algorithms and notable capabilities that will be included:

  • Random forest
  • Extra trees
  • Two anomaly detection algorithms
  • K-Means unsupervised classification
  • Labeling tool
  • Ability to use spectral libraries for training data

See below for some real-world examples (pretty pictures) of how we have applied the machine learning algorithms in our testing.

Watch this on-demand webinar to learn more about these new capabilities and the end-to-end machine learning workflow!

Your friendly neighborhood ENVI Product Manager,
Zach
