Using SAR to Make Infrastructure More Resilient to Climate Change

Infrastructure assets are aging, user demand is heavier than ever and climate change is increasing susceptibility. Keeping infrastructure assets safe and operational under increasingly difficult conditions is becoming a major challenge faced by stakeholders worldwide.

The versatile nature of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote satellite sensing makes space-based earth observation extremely useful for monitoring critical infrastructures such as highways, railways, bridges, dams, buildings and industrial plants. Unlike optical sensors, SAR can operate both day and night, and can even see through clouds. Through advanced SAR Interferometric Stacking techniques, structural conditions of assets can be precisely monitored with millimetric accuracy. Combined with additional parameters and by applying AI techniques, susceptibility maps can be produced indicating infrastructure resilience to geohazards such as landslides and subsidence.
