Hot Mess: Remote Sensing Applications for Wildfires and Other Natural Disasters

 

The impacts of a natural disaster are devastating, regardless of the form it takes. Technology has long been harnessed to create solutions to suppress, control or manage the impact of earthquakes, floods, landslides, fires and more. Each type of disaster presents unique circumstances and challenges, but remote sensing has emerged as a powerful tool that can be deployed with great effect during all phases of the disaster lifecycle from mitigation, to prevention, to response and recovery efforts.

In this episode of Geospatial Distancing we discussed catastrophic wildfires, which are occurring more frequently and at a larger scale than ever before. But the application of remote sensing technology to plan, address and recover from wildfire events can be similarly applied to other types of natural disasters. By discussing the research, and organizational and community efforts around wildfires, we sought to identify the common challenges in facing any type of natural disaster.
