I am running a Mac OSX version 10.10.1 Yosemite. I downloaded IDL 84 native for Mac OSX from the Exelis website (Mac OS X (10.8,10.9) At first it did not work and asked for a license, but then when I downloaded XQuartz 2.7.4 (I think I had a later version originally) it installed. However, when I tried to open the IDL Virtual Machine icon it flashes on the apple menu, but does not open. The path to the file I am trying to open on my machine is: /Applications/exelis/idl84/IDLVirtualMachine. I have tried many things, re-installing, restarting my machine, fixing up permissions etc. but nothing has worked. IDL 84 works fine (in the evaluation version). Please help me get this started. I would really like to use IDL Virtual Machine so that I can access the BCAL LiDAR tools as soon as possible.

Hello, I should start off with mentioning that currently, IDL 8.4 is not supported on Mac 10.10. With that being said, there are many users who have successfully installed IDL on their Macs without a problem. I should also add that IDL 8.5 will be supported on Mac 10.10 and comes out later this year. There are two things that I would recommend doing to try and fix your problem. First, I would read the following help article which talks about needing Java and XQuartz for Mac 10.10. I would suggest making sure Java 6 is installed and the latest version of XQuartz. The next thing to try is opening a demo save file to make sure that it is not the BCAL LiDAR VM. To do this, from a terminal you can type: idl -novm -rt="/Applications/exelis/idl84/lib/hook/demo.sav" You should be in the bin directory of the IDL84 installation where the IDL application lives.
