Updating to the 7.0 FINAL of 32bit windows version (idl70winx86_32.exe) from a preview version of IDL 7.0 does not seem to work properly. After the update, executing from command prompt within the DE gave us: print, !Version.release We found that it was necessary to uninstall IDL 7.0 from Add/Remove Programs AND delete the C:\Program Files\ITT\IDL70 folder.

This is a known problem for IDL 7.0 Alpha and Beta Testers. We are making an internal Tech Tip on this subject that will probably become a broadcast Email to our whole Alpha/Beta testing community. I paste here the basic content of the announcement: "Proposed internal tech tip -------------------------- Recent modifications to the IDL Workbench cause conflicts between the Technology Preview releases and IDL 7.0. To avoid these conflicts, we suggest you do the following: - Completely uninstall any IDL 7.0 Technology Preview versions you have on your system - If you are using a 64-bit Windows installation, manually delete the IDL 7.0 Start menu items that remain after you have uninstalled the Technology Preview. - Delete the .idl/itt/idlworkbench-config-idl70 directory. - On Microsoft Windows systems, the .idl directory is found in the "Documents and Settings/" directory. - On Macintosh and UNIX systems, the .idl directory is found in the directory specified by the user's $HOME environment variable. Removing the configuration directory will remove any customizations you may have made to the layout of the IDL Workbench, but will not remove any IDL source files. - Rename your IDL Workspace directory and create a new workspace directory when you install the IDL 7.0 release version. If there are IDL source code or other files in the old workspace directory, you can import them into the new workspace directory using the File->Import menu item. Once you have imported your files into the new workspace directory, delete the old workspace directory. " James Jones ITT Technical Support

I have succesfully updated IDL 7 on Windows from the Tech Preview to the full release using the method above. However, the Mac version gives me a heck of a time. The DE crashes during startup and the error messages are worse than useless. There are no log files that I could find, so I am really frustrated. It may be too early to ask, but did anyone else have problems installing v7 on an Intel Mac? BTW: This Mac did not have the preview installed. Any suggestions for a trouble shooting procedure are most welcome. Haje
