Hello, I have a DELL XPS M1530 with Ubuntu 8.10, where I installed IDL 7.0.  This is the first time that I use IDL7.0, before I always used IDL6.0. I'm having trobles using some libraries, the astronomical libraries ( http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftp/.) I try to give the path of these libraries in many ways (from the IDL terminal, or  exporting the IDL_PATH in my .bashrc) without any success. Actually, the path is recognized by the system (I checked with echo $IDL_PATH) and "ignored" by IDL! I tryed also to copy all the procedure in the /lib folder of IDL, or in the folder where I'm working and I can run only few procedures, that is really strange for me. Are there any incompatibilities with IDL7?I'm used to run all these libraries with iDL 6.0, and I know that I couple of my collegues are using IDL7 in Mac OS or windows without troubles. Do you know any incompatibilities between IDL7 and ubuntu 8.10 ?  In the past with idl6.0 I used mandriva. Is there anything that I can install to make IDL working? I tryed also to use the idlde to give the path, but with the same result. Moreover when I open IDLDE i should change always the IDL_worksapce because the the system gives an error! Where can I dowload the IDL6.0 version just to make test it my ubuntu 8.10? I accidentally erased the installation file in my IDL6.0 folder and I need a new one. Any help is appreciated! Thanks

that's curious. I just installed the SDSS IDL_binutils package with IDL 7.0 on unbuntu 8.10  while setting up the path in idlde without problem. I suspect if you have the write permission to the configuration files for IDL 7.0, which should be (in my case) located at $HOME/.idl/itt/pref-10-idl_7_0-unix/idl.pref
