I installed IDL 7 on Ubuntu 8.10. Unfortunatley, Help and idlde crash. I tried to install all libstdc by using synatic, but the problem persists. Please, can you help me? Thanks in advance.   Giuseppe Marino (Catania Astrophysical observatory)

It may be the JRE you are using.  There is information on obtaining the correct JRE in the Release Notes for IDL and also in this tech tip: http://www.ittvis.com/ser...echtip.asp?ttid=4442

Thanks a lot. I also installed a lot of packages that sound as java, C++, etc. However, now it seems does work!! There is only one problem (I hope...): when I click on the link "relase notes" on the on line help, I receive the following message: The element type "li" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "" and the browser shows something like: An error occured while processing the requested document: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The element type "li" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "". at com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.parsers.DOMParser.parse(DOMParser.java:242) at com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.jaxp.DocumentBuilderImpl.parse(DocumentBuilderImpl.java:286) at org.eclipse.help.internal.dynamic.DocumentReader.read(DocumentReader.java:56) at org.eclipse.help.internal.dynamic.XMLProcessor.process(XMLProcessor.java:49) at org.eclipse.help.internal.xhtml.DynamicXHTMLProcessor.process(DynamicXHTMLProcessor.java:66) at org.eclipse.help.internal.webapp.servlet.DynamicXHTMLFilter$1.close(DynamicXHTMLFilter.java:79) at java.io.FilterOutputStream.close(FilterOutputStream.java:160)     Please, how can I fix this problem?

This bad link is a known issue with IDL 7.0.6.  It is fixed in IDL 7.0.8 which comes with the ENVI 4.6.1 distribution.  The rest of the help should work as expected.  To view the release notes, you will have to manually open the text file that comes in the IDL distribution under \itt\idl706.
