Do you mean Leaf Area Index? I don't think there is one established equation that can be used to calculate a value that is correlated to LAI for all ecosystems. My understanding is that this is much discussed in the literature, and that many researchers propose many different equations for different types of vegetation. I think you would need to review the literature that is relevant to your particular area of interest and data, to find an equation that is most appropriate for your situation.
Although, I think lots of people have tried to find correlations between NDVI and LAI in different types of vegetation. Is that what you mean by the old method?
