Here's the situation (forgive the long lead-up). I have a Landsat 8 image. When downloaded from GloVis each of the bands 1 through 11 is a seperate TIFF image. I will not be using bands 1, 9, 10, or 11 for my evaluation, so I open bands 2-8 in ENVI Classic and create a stacked image of all of those bands (the bands are ordered 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). If I then want to create an NDVI image, which bands do I designate as Red and NIR in the NDVI dialog box. I know that technically those are the bands 4 and 5 in Landsat 8, but when you designate the bands in the dialog box for a stacked image is it able to 'see' that the red band (band 4) is now in the 3rd position of the stacked image and band 5 is in the 4th position? Should I set the bands in the dialog box to 3 and 4 because of the position of the bands in the stacked image or 4 and 5 as those are the actual bands? I've never had to worry about this before, always used Landsat 7 where 3 was in the third position, 4 was in the fourth, etc. Maybe a future SP will add Landsat 8 functionality, but what is the 'work around' in the meantime? Any ideas/experience/suggestions?

The most recent service pack included Landsat 8 improvements for ENVI 5. As a workaround, you could open the image using ENVI 5 and export to a different format if you'd prefer to process in ENVI Classic. http://www.exelisvis.com/Support/Help...

Thanks for the response, Crystal, but I would like to know the answer to the 'stacking' question for future reference. Does the band designation on the NDVI dialog box refer to the actual bands or the location of the bands in a stacked image? It is possible that there could be a time when even using a different image such as Landsat 5 or Landsat 7) that the band order could (for some reason) need to be changed or some bands not included in the stacked image. Plus, until ENVI 5 includes several tools that I use on a regular basis I would prefer to just work in Classic vs. having to alternate between the 2 versions.

It refers to the location in the file and it is not aware of the wavelengths assigned to the bands. So, it is best if you know which bands correspond to the red and NIR bands and make sure they are the correct ones set in the dialog. Or you can use Band Math to perform the equation.
