Hi, I've recently installed a software package for idl 6.0 on my Mac (OS X Tiger 10.4.1). The package often spawns new shells. At one point I get the following error message: % Unable to allocate memory: to expand environment. I've been searching on the internet for the meaning of this message, but haven't been able to find anything, except for one Windows related problem. Does anyone know what the source of this error (message) could be? Cheers, Jeroen

As you indicate, this is a memory problem (a lack of memory). Check into adding chip memory and/or configuring more virtual memory for the chip memory you have. You should also re-try after closing as many applications as possible Bob Holdaway.

This problem occurs under WINDOWS (not OSX) if you do not use the syntax setenv,"var=val" e.g. setenv,"var val" setenv,"var = val" both cause this error. Under linux, the incorrect forms produce no error message, they just don't work.
