When I use the plot command, i.e. plot,x,y, there is a long delay before the plot appears in the plot window. If I type “window”, then the plot appears right away. When I use the overplot command - overplot,x,y - it also takes a long time for the plot to appear. What’s going on and how do I fix it? I’m running IDL 8.4.1 on MAC OS X Yosemite, using the latest version of X11 (2.7.7) and Terminal.

Hello, Is this is new problem or one that has persisted? Are you using a lot of direct graphics plot windows at once and are you displaying a lot of information in them? There are a lot of factors that could be affecting this: your CPU performance, what other programs are also running, and if you are trying to quickly draw many different direct graphics windows. Direct graphics depend on your CPU and do not use a graphics card, so if you have a lot of processing going on, then it will likely take longer to make your plots.
