Georeferencing MASTER Data

Some image data formats contain input geometry files that can be used, through some steps, to georeference the image. This article addresses certain releases of MASTER data which have within their *.hdf file data stack, two data files that can be used to build a GLT file. (Building this GLT file is the first step of two used in creating a georeferenced image). These two files known as; PixelLongitude and PixelLatitude, are used as the Input X Geometry Band and Input Y Geometry Band respectively during the 'Build GLT' process. The steps for this two part process are outlined below.

Step 1 Building the GLT
  • File -> Open External File -> Generic Formats -> HDF
    ...and choose the file
  • In the HDF Dataset Selection dialog scroll down to the bottom and use Control+click to choose the following files; PixelLatitude and PixelLongitude
After these files are displayed in the Available Bands List chose the following from the main menu:
  • Map -> Georeference from Input Geometry -> Build GLT
Select PixelLongitude as the Input X Geometry Band and PixelLatitude as the Input Y Geometry Band. Follow the dialogs by selecting the appropriate 'Input Projection of Geometry Bands' and 'Output Projection for Georeferencing'.
A default output pixel size and rotation angle is calculated, and it appears in the Build Geometry Lookup File Parameters dialog. If the image needs to have 'North' as up then change the Output Rotation to 0.

Step 2 Georeferencing from the GLT

Now that the GLT file has been built it can be used to create the georeferenced image.

  • Map -> Georeference from Input Geometry -> Georeference from GLT
