ENVI 5.0 / IDL 8.2 fails to run when using ENVI HASP licensing on (32-bit) Windows 7

THIS INFORMATION ONLY PERTAINS TO SOFTWARE VERSIONS IDL 8.5, ENVI 5.3 AND PRIOR

Using an ENVI 5.0 HASP-type license on a 32-bit Windows 7 system causes the ENVI 5.0/IDL 8.2 executables to crash on that system.  If you remove the HASP license.dat file or define your system environment variable LM_LICENSE_FILE to point to a valid non-HASP license source, then the executables don't crash.

Until the problem can be fixed, available workarounds include the following:

1.) Work with your Exelis VIS sales account representative, or local distributor, to convert your ENVI HASP license to a network floating (FL) or node-locked (SN) license.

2.) Use the HASP license on a 32-bit Windows XP or Vista system. (Note that at this time, we have not yet been able to test for this issue on 32-bit Windows 8. Our current assumption is that the ENVI HASP license won't work with 32-bit Windows 8 because of the underlying similarities between Windows 7 and 8. We will update this help article with additional information as it becomes available.)

NOTE: ENVI HASP (dongle key) licensing is not currently compatible with 64-bit Windows operating systems. For more information, see also Help Article 4644:
