(INTERNAL) ENVI/IDL installation error on Mac OS X: "Tar Errors"

Topic:
While installing ENVI or IDL on Mac OS X, a customer encountered a series of error message dialogs with content like the folllowing:

Error installing bin.darwin.i386.tar.Z

Dialog content:

Tar Errors

The following error was encountered while installing bin.darwin.i386.tar.Z

dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
[ repeats several more times... ]

This problem appears to be a system configuration problem. Possible solutions are discussed below.Discussion:

NOTE If the user is not confortable issuing these commands, they should consult a system administrator or apple support.

• From the man page for "update_dyld_shared_cache":
  
  
  If a safe-boot is done (booting with shift key held down) the cache is deleted.

  • Issue command and then reboot.:
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache

  • Or do a safe boot, which deletes the cache, and then reboot.
