License installation instructions for particular product, platform and license type configurations

THIS INFORMATION ONLY PERTAINS TO SOFTWARE VERSIONS IDL 8.5, ENVI 5.3 AND PRIOR
 

This help article provides step-by-step instructions regarding license installation for specific system, license type and product configurations. This article is for the latest version of ENVI and IDL available. You may also find further information in the ENVI or IDL product documentation. In the event you encounter any troubles or problems, please contact NV5 Technical Support.

REQUIREMENTS Are you using a previous version of ENVI/IDL?
  • Administrator or root privileges may be required to install and configure Exelis product licenses.
  • If you haven't already done so, please download and install ENVI or IDL before proceeding.
   Please Note!
The following procedures will overwrite any existing license.dat file located in the license directory with the new license.dat file you are installing.

 

Windows Macintosh Linux / Unix

 

Licensing for Windows Operating Systems
  Flexible Single User / Floating / Node Lock  License Types

Begin by running the License Wizard. On Windows 7 / Vista / XP, click Start Menu » All Programs » IDL 8.4» Tools » License Wizard. On Windows 8, click Start Screen » All Apps » License Wizard. Alternatively, the License Wizard application can be found in the Exelis installation directory(by default, the installation directory is C:\Program Files\Exelis\).

By default, the "Activate a license using the internet" option is selected when the License Wizard opens. Use this option if you do not already have the license file that you wish to install(see the To activate your license using the Internet section for further instructions regarding this option).

The below steps will walk you through installing the license file once you obtain it:

  1. After receiving your license file via email, save the *.lic or *.dat license file attachment to your hard drive.
  2. In the License Wizard, select the "Install a license you have received" option and click next.
  3. Select "Browse to import license file..."
  4. Browse to the location where you saved the *.lic or *.dat file, select the file, and click "Open".
    For Server-based/Floating Licenses ONLY:
    If this is the first time that you have installed a server-based license on this machine, you will be prompted to "Install license manager service" and "Launch lmtools utility to manage service". Make sure both are checked, and click Next.
  5. Click Finish.
    Do you need to configure a client machine to fetch a license from a license server machine?

 

  HASP(dongle) License Type **ENVI ONLY**

 

NOTE
You should have received your hardware dongle with your product. If you haven't received these items, please contact your NV5 Geospatial sales representative.

To install your license file and hardware dongle, complete the following steps:

  1. Shut down your computer. Always shut down your computer before installing or removing a HASP dongle.
  2. Insert the HASP dongle into any USB port(or parallel port if you're using a parrallel port dongle). The arrows on the HASP should point toward the back of the computer.
  3. Start your computer.
  4. Once your computer is booted up, run the License Wizard. On Windows 7 / Vista / XP, click Start Menu » All Programs » IDL 8.4 » Tools » License Wizard. On Windows 8, click Start Screen » All Apps » License Wizard. Alternatively, the License Wizard application can be found in the Exelis installation directory(by default, the installation directory is C:\Program Files\Exelis\).
  5. Enter your license key text by selecting "Install a license you have received", click "Next" to continue.
  6. Browse to the location of the license file, select it, then click "Next" to continue.
  7. Install the hardware dongle drivers. The HASP Driver Installation screen appears. Click Yes to start the installation of the required drivers for HASP licensing. This may take a few minutes. After the installation is complete, click OK.
  8. Click Finish.

 

NOTE
If the hardware dongle is removed during a software session or if you start your software without the hardware key attached, the software enters seven-minute demonstration mode, and you will not be able to save your work.

 

 

Licensing for Macintosh Operating Systems

Begin by opening an XQuartz terminal(which can be found under /Applications/utilities/). Within the terminal, change the working directory to the "bin" subdirectory of the Exelis software installation. For example, if the software is installed in the default installation path, you would issue this command to navigate to the "bin" dir: cd /Applications/exelis/idl84/bin

Then issue these two commands to set up the environment and ensure the license manager starts properly:

. ./idl_setup.bash
sudo ./lmgrd_install

After issuing those commands, start the License Wizard application with sudo privleges by issuing this command:

sudo ./exelislicense

By default, the "Activate a license using the internet" option is selected when the License Wizard opens. Use this option if you do not already have the license file that you wish to install(see the To activate your license using the Internet section for further instructions regarding this option).

Begin by opening a Bash terminal and change the working directory to the "bin" subdirectory of the Exelis software installation. For example, if the software is installed in the default installation path, you would issue this command to navigate to the "bin" dir: cd /usr/local/exelis/idl84/bin

Then issue these two commands to set up the environment and ensure the license manager starts properly:

. ./idl_setup.bash

Web Portal Licensing Instructions

  To activate your license using the Internet

These steps will walk you through activating, obtaining, and installing your license using the web licensing portal. If you already have a license file that you wish to install, please click here and select your system's operating system to go to the appropriate license installation procedure.

Begin by starting the License Wizard:

  • Windows:
    On Windows 7/Vista/XP, click Start Menu » All Programs » IDL 8.4 » Tools » License Wizard. On Windows 8, click Start Screen » All Apps » License Wizard. Alternatively, the License Wizard application can be found in the Exelis installation directory(by default, the installation directory is C:\Program Files\Exelis\).
  • Macintosh:
    Using an XQuartz terminal, change the working directory to the exelis installation directory(by default this directory is /Applications/exelis/idl84/bin) and run this command: sudo ./exelislicense.
  • Unix/Linux:
    Using a Bash terminal, change the working directory to the exelis installation "bin" directory(by default this directory is /usr/local/exelis/idl84/bin/) and run this command: sudo ./exelislicense.
  1. Select the "Activate a license using the internet" option and click next
  2. Login to the Exelis Website (www.exelisvis.com)
  3. Select your license number from the list
  4. Click Activate(This will build and activate your new license automatically for you)
  5. Click Next in the License Wizard, then finish.

 

  To activate your license if you don’t have Internet Access

 

  1. Select the "Request a license if you don’t have internet access" option and click next.
  2. A new window will pop open with the information necessary to activate and build your license.
    Please contact NV5 Technical Support and include that information in your request.
