I hope to install idl 6.4 on my school's SGI machine which is supported by SUSE Linux. But I failed to install idl_linux.x86_64.tar.gz on it. The problem appears as follows: huting@altix-2:~> idlde /usr/local/bin/idlde: line 496: /usr/local/itt/idl64/bin/bin.linux.x86/idlde: cannot execute binary file /usr/local/bin/idlde: line 496: /usr/local/itt/idl64/bin/bin.linux.x86/idlde: Success I found James Jones answer a similar question. http://www.idl-envi.com/f...essage.asp?fmid=1546 Is my problem the same as it? I hope not! Thank you all for your attentions!

It is probably the same problem. In order for IDL to work on a Linux system the output of that system's shell command "uname -i" (or "uname -a" if your SGI machine does not accept the "-i" flag) must show that the processor hardware (a.k.a. "chipset") for your machine is either "i386" or "x86_64". There is a good chance that SGI, which, for its IRIX operating, system did not use these Intel/AMD "architectures", is not using them for its Linux operating system either. If you can confirm my suspicions, can you reply to this Forum message, so that ITT Visual Information Solutions can add your test results to their knowledge base? James Jones
