Yinyin: I am no expert on the LAS file format, but I DO know that ITT Visual Information Solutions has a whole web site devoted to a recent LIDAR Tookit developed by one of our Sales Engineers. Have you visited the following ITT URL? http://www.ittvis.com/groups/index.asp?gid=234 James Jones ITT Technical Support

Unfortunately that link was created when the company was named ITT VIS and we have since changed our name to Exelis VIS. On top of that, we will likely be changing our name again soon because we have been acquired by Harris Corporation. You may want to look at the following link which has a google group which discusses this: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/comp.lang.idl-pvwave/BRF8oDj-5SM/lbHzWyJUPf0J I am unaware of a native IDL specific function to read LAS files. I should point out that the above link points to third party code and is not directly supported by Exelis VIS. If you need help with the code, you will need to get in contact with the developer.

An excellent library for LAS files was made available recently (not by me!): "Carbomap has released the fleurdelas class as an Open Source project. Fleurdelas is an IDL implementation of a LAS file reader/writer." "The source code can be found at: https://github.com/carbomap/fleurdelas" This original thread generated some discussion, and in the 16th post here, I put some example code showing how easy it is to use it: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/comp.lang.idl-pvwave/fleurdelas/comp.lang.idl-pvwave/BRF8oDj-5SM/TWa7Vzuf06QJ This more recent post tells of the latest release: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/comp.lang.idl-pvwave/carbomap/comp.lang.idl-pvwave/1pufGKpxz8c/S36H9hQDodwJ Hope this helps! -Dick Dick Jackson Software Consulting Inc.
