I am looking for a way for using the iTools for non-interactive (batch) proccesing. The idea is to use for example iPlot in batch mode to produce a plot, save it both as an image (e.g. jpeg)as well as in *.isv format. If needed a user can later costumize the plot by running iPlot in the interactive mode and openening the *.isv file. Another application is to use iPlot to create an iPlot in a specific layout and save it to *.isv file. Later the batch mode may be used to add or modify the data, redraw the plot and save it to an image file. For the batch mode it is needed that plots are written to a buffer instead of to a window. Also needed are ways to generate commands (replacing the user interaction with the menu etc.) in the batch mode. Has anyone tried this or ideas how to do this? Thanks in advance, Pepijn.

Greetings Pepijn, I wanted to let you know that some of the things you are asking for will be available in the IDL 6.1 release this summer. This will include the ability to save and apply "styles" to control the properties of a visualization, the ability to record and run macros from the command line, and additional command line control over existing iTools. With regards to your question about buffering: This can be done (on UNIX) by running a CRON job by using a virtual frame buffer. For information on this, see the following tech tip on our Web site: http://www.rsinc.com/serv...echtip.asp?ttid=2382 I hope this helps!
