Our group recently updated to IDL 7.1 and ever since I've been having issues with the text manipulation in the development environment.  For instance, it doesn't actively highlight text, i.e. the highlighting isn't displayed until the end when the mouse is released.  Not a major problem, just a minor annoyance. The other is more problematic though.  Many times when highlighting and either deleting or replacing text the interface seriously glichtes, not replacing all the text, removing the display of text elsewhere in the file when navigating using the arrow keys, and overall just erratically altering the display.  Now these changes aren't actually being made to the file because when I save the .pro file (which causes the entire display to go blank by the way) and then close and reopen it, only the changes I input are there.  Not sure what's going on and I've included links to several pictures of screens while one particular deletion cycle was occurring as well as a couple of the error messages: www.prism.gatech.edu/~cscholes3/IDLerror/deletion2.jpg www.prism.gatech.edu/~cscholes3/IDLerror/deletion3.jpg www.prism.gatech.edu/~cscholes3/IDLerror/deletion4.jpg www.prism.gatech.edu/~cscholes3/IDLerror/deletion5.jpg www.prism.gatech.edu/~cscholes3/IDLerror/deletion6.jpg www.prism.gatech.edu/~cscholes3/IDLerror/IDL_Deletion_error_message.jpg www.prism.gatech.edu/~cscholes3/IDLerror/Java_Error_in%20IDL_7_1.jpg For the deletion cycle the highlighted text was already deleted in deletion 1, each the pictures are of subsequent deletions deletions of whitespace and what is displayed as a result.  As you can see, this is not normal display as the v line and 'end' are duplicated and removed and the return coloration becomes faulty and then disappears.  The first error message is what was displayed after saving and attempting to manipulate the text without closing and reopening the file.  The other error message is one that was shown after reopening IDL. I hope this is clear enough and that someone can help me out.  Thanks for your time.

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear that you're having so much trouble in IDL 7.1 on your machine.  I suspect that this problem is related to a conflict that we've recently discovered between recent Mac OS 10.5 updates and IDL 7.1.  If you happen to be running IDL 7.1 on Mac OS 10.5.7, then here are details about that problem and its solution: ****************************************** Apple's recent 10.5.7 update causes the IDL 7.1 editor window view in the IDL Workbench to malfunction and become non-responsive to the keyboard.  Common error messages may say something like this: Problem Occurred An error has occurred. See error log for more details Java.lang.IllegalStateException Other similar java errors have been reported. Typical behavior is a non-responsive Editor in the Workbench. After coding for a while, or sometimes immediately, keyboard responsiveness is lost, at which point attempting to interact with the Editor can result in strange behavior such as a grayed out Editor window or text appearing to move around within the editor window. Some users will see the java error like that mentioned, some will not. After this occurs it is not possible to regain control of the editor. Re-launching IDL will not fix the issue. It may give you control for a short time, but the error will again present itself. The ITT Visual Information Solutions software development team has identified the problem and has issued a Mac OS X specific update to the IDL Workbench which fixes this problem. The recent Apple updates made changes to the Java Runtime Environment upon which the IDL Workbench relies. An unforeseen incompatibility arose, which caused the problem. The IDL 7.1.1 Workbench update is available in our Product Download section located at the link below. Under "IDL Products" select "IDL 7.1", then you will need to log in and select the IDL 7.1.1 Workbench Update for Mac OS X. Complete installation instructions can be found on the download page. http://www.ittvis.com/Dow...roductDownloads.aspx This update does not update or change core IDL or any of IDL's functionality, it is purely an update to the Eclipse based IDL Workbench development environment to provide compatibility with the latest updates from Apple. ****************************************** If this doesn't seem like it explains the problem you're seeing, or if the update doesn't fix the problem for you, then I recommend you contact ITT VIS Technical Support (support@ittvis.com or (303) 413-3920).  Peg

I think this did it :).  Thanks for the rapid reply and the helpful info.  I'll let you guys know if I encounter any more problems.  Also, fyi, I'm running Mac OS X v. 10.4.11 so this error seems to not be limited to v. 10.5 and greater.  Just in case others may encounter this issue and find the solution you gave which says it's a problem with the 10.5 update.  Cheers! Matt
