I am running IDL 8.1, on Mac OS X 10.8.2. I just begrudgingly migrated over from IDL 7.1, which I really liked. I do not like the combined IDL console + command line interface now in 8.1 I much prefer the two being separated as it was in 7.1. I liked the console being one line at the bottom and a separate "command-line-esque" screen above that contained my coded lines/history. Is there a way to revert back to that format? It's fine if they want to make these kinds of interface changes, but they should allow people who do not like such changes to revert back to a previous style. Or let me modify the interface myself? Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Havok, I'm afraid that is not possible, i.e. to separate the two, console and prompt, in the new IDL 8.x versions. You could do the following though: 1- reduce the size of the console/prompt, so that you see only that view as a prompt. 2- start JOURNAL: JOURNAL, 'myjournal.pro', where you will save every command. 3- view the output file in an editor, updating the file everytime. Cheers, Fernando Exelis VIS

Hmm, that's too bad. It seems like it's just an interface issue that could be easily modifiable. Maybe this feature could be added back in to later versions as an option for people? In the meantime, I will do what you suggest. Thanks for the response.

Hi Havok, Well, this is not as simple as modifying a java interface (since the Workbench is a java application), because the console is where Java and IDL (the IDL core C codes) communicate each other. So that the console is a critical part of the Workbench. Cheers, Fernando
