I'm getting extremely frustrated with Envi. Right now, I'm trying to put together a mosaic (for the first time). There is a field for "Data value to ignore", which I presume will help me get rid of the black borders on the overlays. The problem is that the value under the cursor is composed of *three* numbers, whereas the data ignore field only takes one. And not a damned thing in the Help file shows you which number to use. Every example I find uses a background data of [0,0,0], so it says the value is 0. Of course, it would have been far more helpful if they used an example such as [-16,-218,-164]. Can someone help me understand what I'm supposed to do here? Envi is a very capable program, but the UI and Help files leave much to be desired. For what it's worth, I'm using 5.0, not 5.1. Thanks.

ENVI 5.0 uses the Classic mosaic tool. You can only have one data ignore value with this tool and usually it is a background value where images overlap. If you need to ignore pixels with different values in each band, then you might want to create and apply a mask that will set those pixels to a single 'background value' that will be ignored during the mosaic. ENVI 5.1 has a new Seamless mosaic tool that allows you to set a data ignore value for each band. If you can upgrade to 5.1, you might prefer this tool.

I'm using 5.0, and I'm about to throw ENVI out the window. No matter what I try, including mask files, I can't get the mosaic to work properly. The black diagonal frames still overlap each other. The manual mentioned cutline feathering - of course, all it says about creating a cutfile is that it's an annotation with a line that goes from one edge to another, with a symbol indicating the side of the line to be cut. I do this, and I get told by the mosaic module that it's not a valid file. I know that I'm not a veteran user, but this application is so poorly designed, I don't know how anyone uses it. I am about to throw it out and use someone else's product.
