Hello-
I've been using DataMiner to retrieve records from a large Oracle DataBase.
The DataBase is several gigabytes in size; A simple query can often take a
half hour to complete. For more complex larger queries, it's not uncommon for
it to take a few hours to completely finish. In the meantime, the IDL window
goes unresponsive, displaying a 'Not Responding' message, until the task is
finally completed, then the window gets updated.
1) First of all, is there a way of preventing the 'Not Responding' message?
I need to be able to see the progress within the IDL window, so in the very
least I can determine how far along my task is completed.
2) How might I go about speeding up the DataMiner querying process? I've
read in some papers, that tuning your database driver is a possibile solution.
But I've not found any references to the setup that I'm using. I'm using the
Merant 3.70 32-BIT Oracle8 driver, to access an Oracle 9i database on a
Solaris SunOS 5.8. Admittedly, I don't know much about drivers, but does
anyone have any experience optimizing the performance of the Merant 3.70
drivers? Or do you know how I might got about tuning them, or where I might
get a newer compatible driver that is faster? Or would you recommend using
the MS drivers instead?
I'd appreciate any help or insight you could provide in this matter! If you could
point me towards any useful technical papers on the issue, that would be great.
Even if you just have some simple suggestions on how to change my settings
to optimize for large searches, that might prove helpful, and save me hours and
hours of wasted query time in the long run. Thank you for your help and insight!
Best Regards,
Chris Vick
