Hello,
I've downloaded a Landsat USGS surface reflectance product in GeoTiff format. However, the metadata are not in the usual _MTL format but as an XML file. How does one open this in ENVI?
Thank you

I have not seen Landsat files with an XML for the metadata. Where did you acquire the files? I am afraid ENVI will not read the XML as the metadata as it is expected the metadata to be present in the mtl.txt.

Thanks for the information. I will download a scene and see if ENVI can support it. If not, I will put in a feature request.

I just thought I would chime in and let you know we are aware of these products becoming available. I have been waiting for a chance to download some of these datasets to see what we would need to do, if anything, to ensure support in ENVI. I am actually in the process of downloading some sample datasets now. I will let you know when I have additional information, but I did notice an option for downloading the files in ENVI format directly from USGS. I am going to do some testing soon to make sure these files actually work in ENVI, but this might be worth looking into.
Thanks!
Joe

FYI, I did some testing and wrote a blog about what I came up with, which can be found here:

I will have my code for getting the surface reflectance bands stacked into a single image file with appropriate metadata up on our extensions library soon and I will post a reply here once I have that taken care of. For now, you can use the Layer Stacking tool and the Edit ENVI header tool to do this manually.

Hi, I just wondered whether the suggested extension for automatically opening the Landsat Surface Reflectance datasets as multiband images is likely to be available soon? I am soon to start multispectral processing of ~500 TM scenes and ideally would like to use the new Surface Reflectance datasets- the extension would therefore save me a lot of time in comparison to building the layer stacks and headers manually. Thanks- wish they just provided an .mtl file for the new data!

Support for Landsat with XML files (CDR/LSR) is on the backlog of projects to complete. I do not have an expected completion date at this time.

Ok, I can now plan accordingly. Thanks for letting me know, and for the prompt reply.

Hello, I have the same problem. I acquired Landsat images from https://espa.cr.usgs.gov where the metadata file is in XML format. As I will work with large number of images (about 400) I need to open them stacked from the metadata (.xml). How can I do that in ENVI 5?

Hi, we have been with the metadata .xlm files for the higher level (corrected) Landsat archive for 2 years now. I was really hoping that ENVI 5.4.1 would have dealt with this option already. are there any plans for accommodating this files in the next patch? is there an idl script that could be distributed?

Support for OLI (Landsat-8) surface reflectance was added to ENVI 5.4.1. We still have an open feature request to support older data sets. You can use the Layer Stacking tool or New File Builder and import the separate TIFF files to create the stacked data set as a work around.

I'm not sure which landsat 8 collection you are referring to -- perhaps a lower level interim product? The higher level "Landsat Surface Reflectance Higher-Level Data Product" is not 'older data', it is the newest most corrected version that contains the entire landsat archive (all sensors since 1982). This is the archive most users are accessing these days because it is atmospherically corrected; the metadata comes in .xml https://landsat.usgs.gov/landsat-surface-reflectance-high-level-data-products. They started releasing it 2 years ago.

By older data sets, I mean Landsat 4-7 Surface reflectance products. For these data, ENVI does not open the bands via the XML and you have to use Layer Stacking with the TIFF files. Then add in any metadata such as wavelengths using View Metadata->Edit Metadata. You should be able to open OLI (Landsat-8) surface reflectance products using the XML in ENVI 5.4.1.
