Display problems may be a graphics card issue

Many display issues can be caused by incompatible graphics/video card drivers. Since there are so many cards and drivers on different operating systems, it is difficult to recommend exactly which ones to use. The following are guidelines of what to look for and how to correct the issues.

Display Problems

  • Plots or images are not displaying the way they should
  • The program crashes when trying to display a visualization

Things to Try

  • For optimal performance, your video card should have a minimum of 1 GB RAM and should support OpenGL 2.0 or later.
  • To find out if the problem is with your hardware, change the rendering mode to Software. (In the IDL Workbench, navigate to Window > Preferences. In the Preferences dialog, select IDL > Graphics. In the Graphics section under Rendering method for object graphics, select Software.)
  • Install the latest drivers for your video card.

If none of these solutions works, you may need to upgrade the graphics card on your machine.
