How to fix the "Installation failed" error when installing ENVI or IDL on MacOS

Error Message:

Attempting to install ENVI or IDL on MacOS via the package (.pkg) file can result in a generic "Installation Failed" error as shown in the screenshot below.

Solution:

The reason this error occurs is because the installer can encounter MacOS security restrictions when attempting to run it from certain folders on your computer. The Downloads folder can sometimes be problematic, but also folders that are linked to cloud storage (e.g. iCloud, OneDrive, or Dropbox) can cause this error to appear.

To fix this issue, use Finder to move the .pkg file to a new folder prior to attempting to install ENVI or IDL. We recommend moving it to your user Desktop (/Users/YourUsername/Desktop) as MacOS restrictions there are usually minimal. If this is a first time running an installer from that folder, you may receive a pop-up notification asking for permission to allow "Installer" to access there, similar to the pop-up shown below. You must allow this access to proceed with the installation of our products.
