I installed my IDL while being a guest at an institute, and it worked well using their license. When I came back home, I tried to switch to the remote license of my home institute, and must have messed something up. IDL won't start anymore. It doesn't seem to be a problem of the license, since the crash happens before any message about licensing appears.
At first, the message was "segmentation fault" immediately after the > idl command. After a while, it changed to "bus error". I now deleted the .idl folder and got this slightly more descriptive error this time:
[Andromeda: ~] $ idl
IDL Version 7.1.1, Mac OS X (darwin x86_64 m64). (c) 2009, ITT Visual
Information Solutions
idl(454,0x7fff70e71be0) malloc: *** error for object 0x102001278:
incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after
being freed.
*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug
Abort trap
I'm stuck! Can anyone tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

Dear Thalmann,
I was wondering if you had managed to find out what the problem was, or if you had found some kind of workaround. Did un-installing IDL and re-installing it did the trick?.
Please, let me know.
Cheers,
Fernando

Unfortunately, no, reinstalling does not help. I've tried it many times, using the Mac native and the Unix version. I'm also in contact with the IDL support team, which has suggested a lot of solutions (i.e. running with the -32 keyword, or with the -IDL_GR_X_RENDERER 1 keyword), but none have worked so far.
Any ideas?
The weirdest thing is, I originally got this problem on my old MacBook, and when I migrated all my data to the new one, the error migrated along too... I can't help but think it must be a setting somewhere that doesn't get touched by reinstalling IDL. What could that be? Something in the X11 environment?

Hi Thalmann,
Well, maybe you are the person that I'm helping on the direct support team through our distributer. I have written an email just now asking the following:
Did you get the following update or you have an older one?:
2010-04-20 08:12:39 -0400: Installed "Security Update 2010-003" (1.0)
Or do you have an early one?. We have a customer that seems to say that after this latest update IDL started working again, but we cannot tell for certain.
Sometimes, Security updates seem to break X11 in OS X, but it's never clear what happens.
Cheers,
Fernando
