Pros and Cons for the focusing of Sentinel raw data using the SARscape focusing module

Below is a summary of the Pro and Cons for the focusing of Sentinel raw data using the SARscape focusing module, instead of directly using data focused by ESA.

Focusing step consists in converting SAR raw data to SLC - Single Look Complex - data.

PROS:

  • Raw data has a smaller size than SLC data
  • It allows users to modify/control different focusing parameters such as Range and Azimuth windowing, to adjust the outputs to the user specific needs
  • SARSCAPE can perform RFI -radio frequency interference- filtering to Sentinel-1 raw data prior the focusing step, while ESA does not.

CONS:

  • Raw data focused by SARscape is not radiometrically calibrated while SLC data from ESA is radiometrically calibrated.
  • Raw data focused by SARscape cannot be used/combined with ESA SLC images for interferometry purposes.
