License installation instructions for particular product, platform and license type configurations (for versions ENVI 4.8, IDL 8.1 and earlier)

This help article is designed to provide additional step by step information for license installation in regards to specific system, license type and product configurations.

Basic Licensing Instructions

Start the License Wizard

  1. Windows: Click Start > Programs > IDL, ENVI, ENVI EX, or E3De menu item > Tools > License Wizard
  2. Mac: Using the Finder, browse to /Applications/itt/idl/idl81/LicenseWizard.app
  3. Unix/Linux: Using X11 change directories to /usr/local/itt/idl/idl81/bin/ and run "ittlicense".

To activate your license using the Internet

  1. Select "Activate a license using the internet"
  2. Login to the Exelis Website (www.exelisvis.com)
  3. Select your license number from the list
  4. Click Activate (This will build and activate your new license)
  5. Click Next in the License Wizard, then finish.

To activate your license if you don’t have Internet Access

  1. Select "Request a license if you don’t have internet access"
  2. This opens a new window with the necessary information. Please send an email to support@exelisvis.com containing this information.




Licensing for Windows operating systems:

Temporary License:

Begin by starting the licensing wizard. Click Start >> Programs >> ENVI 4.8, ENVI EX 4.8, E3De 3.0, or IDL 8.1 >> Tools >> License Wizard.

The default setting after opening is "Activate a license using the internet". Use this option if you wish to connect towww.exelisvis.com. The website will walk you through a few quick steps and then the license wizard will automatically obtain your license file. The below steps will walk you through the "Install a license you have received" option.

After receiving your license via email, please select the radio button that corresponds to "Install a license you have received" and click next.

  1. Select Install a license you have received.
  2. Select "Browse to import license file..."
  3. Browse to the location you have saved the *.lic file on your system.
  4. Select the ENVIIDLEval*.lic file.
  5. If you previously received an evaluation license, you will need to overwrite the existing license with this one.
  6. Click Finish.

Node-Locked License:

Begin by starting the licensing wizard. Click Start >> Programs >> ENVI 4.8, ENVI EX 4.8, E3De 3.0, or IDL 8.1 >> Tools >> License Wizard.

  6. If this is the first time that you have installed a server-based license on this machine, you will be prompted to "Install license manager service" and "Launch lmtools utility to manage service". Make sure both are checked, and click Next.
  7. Click Finish.

HASP (dongle) License **ENVI ONLY**

NOTE: ENVI HASP licensing is only available on 32-bit Windows operating systems. If you are attempting to use a HASP device on a 64-bit system, please see Tech Tip 4644

After installing ENVI, use the licensing wizard to install the license key for your HASP license. Your license key will be sent to you via email or fax. You should have received your hardware dongle with your Exelis Visual Information Solutions product. If you haven't received these items, please contact your Exelis Visual Information Solutions sales representative by clicking here.

To enter your license key and install your hardware dongle, complete the following steps:

  1. Shut down your computer. Always shut down your computer before installing or removing a HASP.
  2. Insert the HASP into any parallel or USB port. The arrows on the HASP should point toward the back of the computer.
  3. Start your computer.
  4. Start the ENVI Licensing Wizard. Select Start >> Programs >> ENVI 4.8 >> License Wizard.
  5. Enter your license key text by selecting "Install a license you have received", click "Next" to continue.
  6. Browse to the location of the license file, select it, then click "Next" to continue.
  7. Install the hardware dongle drivers. The HASP Driver Installation screen appears. Click Yes to start the installation of the required drivers for HASP licensing. This may take a few minutes. After the installation is complete, click OK.
  8. Click Finish.

   
Note

If the hardware key is removed during a software session or if you start your software without the hardware key attached, the software enters seven-minute demonstration mode, and you will not be able to save your work.




Licensing for Macintosh operating systems:

Temporary License:

Begin by starting the licensing wizard by using the Apple Finder to navigate to the ITT-DIR/idl/idl81 folder, where ITT-DIR is the installation location for your Exelis Visual Information Solutions software (the default is /Applications/itt). In the ITT-DIR/idl/idl81 folder, double-click License Wizard to launch the wizard.

The default setting after opening is "Activate a license using the internet". Use this option if you wish to connect towww.exelisvis.com. The website will walk you through a few quick steps and then the license wizard will automatically obtain your license file. The below steps will walk you through the "Install a license you have received" option.

After receiving your license via email, please select the radio button that corresponds to "Install a license you have received" and click next.

  1. Select Install a license you have received.
  2. Select "Browse to import license file..."
  3. Browse to the location you have saved the *.lic file on your system.
  4. Select the ENVIIDLEval*.lic file.
  5. If you previously received an evaluation license, you will need to overwrite the existing license with this one.
  6. Click Finish.

Node-Locked License:

Begin by opening the Apple X11 application, located at /Applications/utilities/X11.

From an X11 terminal window, change directories to the "bin" subdirectory of the IDL installation. For example based on a default installation path:

cd /Applications/itt/idl/idl81/bin

To ensure the license manager starts properly, set up the environment prior to opening the license wizard. For example:

. ./idl_setup.bash

And then start the license wizard application using "sudo" privleges:

sudo ./ittlicense

The website will walk you through a few quick steps and then the license wizard will automatically obtain your license file. The below steps will walk you through the "Install a license you have received" option.
