"Vendor daemon can't talk to lmgrd" error when attempting to start license manager

THIS INFORMATION ONLY PERTAINS TO SOFTWARE VERSIONS IDL 8.5, ENVI 5.3 AND PRIOR

The following errors might be encountered when attempting to start the license manager for any Exelis Visual Information Solutions software:

(idl_lmgrd) Vendor daemon can't talk to lmgrd (License server machine is down or not responding. (-96,7:2 "No such file or directory"))

(idl_lmgrd) Vendor daemon can't talk to lmgrd (Cannot connect to license server system. (-15,570:115 "Operation now in progress"))

IMPORTANT NOTE

  • Please consult your network administrator if you have questions about or are not familiar with making network configuration changes to your system.

Although this error can manifest with different messages, the end result is typically due to a problem in the hosts file.

The hosts file is located in the /etc/ directory on Macintosh, Linux, and UNIX platforms, with the name "hosts".

To resolve, open the hosts file in a plain text editor, and make sure that at least the following is present on the first line of Macintosh, Linux, and UNIX platforms:

127.0.0.1         localhost

You will also want to make sure there is an alias referencing the system's name.

Correct the hosts file as needed and save the file. After saved, attempt starting the license manager once again and the error should no longer be present. If the error persists or other errors are encountered, please save a copy of the debug log that appears after attempting to start the license manager and send that to Exelis Visual Information Solutions Technical Support for additional troubleshooting.
