ENVI 5: ENVI, EX and Feature Extraction (FE) installation and licensing changes

THIS INFORMATION ONLY PERTAINS TO SOFTWARE VERSIONS IDL 8.5, ENVI 5.3 AND PRIOR

With the release of ENVI 5, ENVI and ENVI EX will be installed simultaneously through one software installer.  When you install ENVI 5 on your desktop system, you will have only ENVI 5.0 and ENVI+IDL 5.0 desktop shortcuts (there will no longer be separate desktop icons for ENVI Zoom or ENVI EX).

The ENVI EX functionality that used to be separate from ENVI (the image processing workflows) is now included in ENVI (with the exception of Feature Extraction, which is a separate ENVI module unlocked with a Feature Extraction license).

Upgrading Existing Licenses

Existing ENVI 4.8 users who upgrade to ENVI 5 will have access to the new single window ENVI display and all of the image processing workflows that are a part of ENVI 5.  Only Rigorous Orthorectification, SARscape, and TFRD have separate installers – all other modules are automatically installed with ENVI 5 and unlocked with a license feature.

To launch ENVI 5, select either the ENVI 5.0 icon (to launch without IDL) or the ENVI + IDL 5.0 icon (to launch with the IDL environment.)  The ENVI interface will look like the following (note the Toolbox options):

All users will also have the option to start the ENVI 3 window paradigm (ENVI Classic) from the Start Menu:

Existing ENVI 4.8 + ENVI EX 4.8 users who upgrade to ENVI 5 will have access to the new single window ENVI display and all of the image processing workflows that are a part of ENVI 5. Additionally, you will already be licensed for Feature Extraction in ENVI 5. Upon upgrade, your license file will be updated to include the new envi_fe feature line to be compatible with ENVI 5.

ENVI EX-only license users

When upgrading ENVI EX 4.8 to 5.0, you will use the ENVI 5.0 installer and have the desktop shortcuts as mentioned above. However, ENVI EX does not allow access to IDL so to launch EX you would select the ENVI 5.0 icon. The ENVI EX interface will launch and look like the following (note the Toolbox options):

ENVI EX licenses upgraded to 5.0 will include the envi_ex and envi_fe (Feature Extraction) license features.
